Michel Benoît is a religious scholar and novelist who spent twenty-two years as a Benedictine monk before leaving the Catholic Church to pursue writing and research. Born in Madagascar in 1940 and trained initially as a pharmacologist, he draws on his monastic experience to explore questions of faith, spirituality, and institutional religion. His debut work, Prisoner of God, an autobiographical account of monastic life, achieved international recognition and established him as a thoughtful voice examining the tensions between personal belief and religious authority.
