By Lee Child Β· 29 books

Complete guide to reading all Jack Reacher books by Lee Child and Andrew Child in order. Publication order, chronological order, and where to start.

About the Jack Reacher series

Jack Reacher is a former US Army Military Police Major who drifts across America with no phone, no home, and no possessions beyond the clothes on his back. Created by Lee Child (pen name of Jim Grant), the series spans 29 novels since 1997. Starting with Past Tense (2018), Lee's brother Andrew Child has co-authored and now writes the series. The books are action-packed thrillers where Reacher stumbles into trouble and systematically dismantles criminal operations.

Recommended reading order (publication)

Each Jack Reacher book is a standalone thriller β€” you can pick up any book and enjoy it without prior knowledge. However, publication order is recommended because Reacher's backstory and character are gradually revealed across books. Key relationships and references build over time.

Can I read them out of order?

Yes β€” each book is designed as a standalone thriller. Reacher arrives in a new place, encounters a problem, solves it (usually violently), and moves on. That said, a few books reference events from earlier novels, and the 61 Hours / Worth Dying For / A Wanted Man sequence works best read together. Starting with Killing Floor gives you the best introduction to the character.

Chronological vs publication order

Several books are set during Reacher's army career (The Enemy, Night School, The Secret) and take place before the rest of the series. However, they were written assuming you already know civilian Reacher, so reading them in publication order works better than chronological. The backstory hits harder when you already know who Reacher becomes.
